Musk reportedly posted in late October that Neuralink's first product is Telepathy (communicate with computers by thought alone) and the second is Blindsight (to give sight to people who are blind). Blindsight is described as ready from an engineering standpoint and awaiting regulatory approval.
Summary in 3 lines
- Musk reportedly posted on X that Neuralink's first product is Telepathy and its second is Blindsight (October 29 or 30).
- Telepathy is described as high-speed communication with computers or people by thinking alone. Blindsight is described as letting even people who have never seen, see.
- Blindsight is "ready from an engineering standpoint, just waiting on regulatory approval." That is not an announcement of approval.
Background knowledge: the brain runs on electrical signals
The brain has roughly 86 billion neurons. Neurons pass information by sending tiny electrical pulses to each other. When you decide to move your right hand, neurons in the motor area fire together, and that pattern of pulses is the intention.
Each pulse is about a thousandth of a volt, one-thousandth of a AA battery. Measured from outside the head, it is blurred by the skull and skin, like trying to hear individual conversations from outside a stadium. So the idea is to insert thin electrodes (metal wires that pick up electricity) next to the neurons. This is a brain-computer interface (BCI). A computer translates the signals into meaning such as "move right." In reverse, tiny currents through the electrodes can send signals into neurons. Being able to both "read" and "write" is the key idea of the field.
What happened
According to reports (such as Tesla North), Musk made two posts on X.
- He called Telepathy Neuralink's "first product," said it enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking, and claimed output bandwidth will vastly exceed the fastest human speech or typing in a few years.
- He called Blindsight the "second product," said it will enable even those who are completely blind or have never seen to see, and that it is ready from an engineering standpoint, just waiting on regulatory approval.
The article dates the post October 29, while the embedded post is dated October 30. These are Musk's personal posts as reported by media, not an official Neuralink release.
Why two products
The names are not new. On March 20, 2024, Musk wrote that Blindsight is the next product after Telepathy. Both rest on the same foundation: electrodes in the brain handling electrical signals. They differ in direction.
| Telepathy | Blindsight | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Read from the brain (output) | Write to the brain (input) |
| Goal | Control devices by thought | Deliver vision |
| Where | Areas related to movement | Visual cortex (back of the head) |
| For | People who cannot move, etc. | People who are blind |
How it works
Telepathy. The implant is about the size of a coin, placed in the skull, with threads thinner than hair reaching the brain surface. Electrodes on the threads pick up neuron pulses and send them wirelessly to a computer or phone. The first participant, Noland Arbaugh, who is quadriplegic, received an implant in January 2024 in the PRIME clinical study and moved a computer cursor by thought.
Blindsight. Normally the retina turns light into electrical signals that travel along the optic nerve to the visual cortex. Blindsight skips the eye: a camera image is converted by a computer into stimulation patterns delivered through electrodes in the visual cortex, which is expected to produce points of light (phosphenes), at first coarse. Whether people blind from birth can use such signals is a big scientific question that upcoming trials will answer.
Timeline
- January 2024: first human implant by Neuralink.
- March 20, 2024: Musk posts that Blindsight is the next product after Telepathy.
- September 17, 2024: Neuralink announces FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for Blindsight.
- Late October 2026: Musk posts about the first and second products (reported).
Breakthrough Device Designation helps speed up review of devices for serious conditions. It is not product approval.
Why it matters
Devices that handle brain signals could let people who cannot move operate machines, and people who cannot see perceive light. Unlike rockets or cars, these are medical devices that must pass safety review. "Ready" refers to engineering, not to approval or launch timing.
Explain it to a friend
- The brain runs on tiny electrical pulses that electrodes can read and write.
- Telepathy reads; Blindsight writes.
- Blindsight is awaiting approval, not approved.
- Common misconception: "they read your thoughts." The electrodes pick up pulses from nearby neurons, not the full content of a thought.
Next question
Can electrodes in the brain keep working for years? Why threads and electrodes can last in such a harsh environment is the next topic worth exploring.

Verification status (2026-11-02): The content of Musk's late-October posts was confirmed through media reports (Tesla North); no official Neuralink release has been confirmed. Background on brain function, the PRIME study and the FDA designation is general knowledge not verified against primary documents here.
