According to Tech Mahindra's press release (October 22, 2026, Pune, India), the company is collaborating with SpaceXSI to bring SpaceXSI's AI development tool "Grok Build" into its enterprise software engineering and application modernization services. The focus industries include telecom, banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail, with joint go-to-market efforts, industry-specific solutions, and enablement and certification programs for engineers.

Summary in three lines
- On October 22, 2026, Indian IT services company Tech Mahindra announced a collaboration with SpaceXSI (the name xAI currently operates under).
- It will bring SpaceXSI's coding AI "Grok Build" into its enterprise software engineering and legacy application modernization services.
- Target industries include telecom, banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. The two companies plan joint go-to-market, industry-specific solutions, and training and certification for engineers.
Background knowledge: IT services firms, legacy systems, and AI agents
An IT services firm is a company that builds and runs systems for other companies. Large businesses depend on a lot of software: a bank's deposit system, a telecom carrier's billing, a factory's production control. Building all of it with in-house engineers is hard, so companies often hire outside specialists to design, build, and maintain it. It is like a homeowner (the enterprise) hiring a general contractor (the IT services firm). Tech Mahindra is one of those contractors; its release says it has more than 150,000 professionals in 90 countries.
A legacy system is an old system that has been in use for many years. A bank system written decades ago may still run correctly every day. But it may be written in an old programming language, the people who built it may have left, and it may be hard to connect to smartphone apps and new services. It is like rebuilding an old house while still living in it. Rebuilding such systems with modern technology is called modernization.
Why is modernization so hard? Old systems often contain hundreds of thousands or millions of lines of code. Suppose one engineer reads and understands 500 lines a day: 1 million lines would take 2,000 working days, or about 8 years at 250 working days a year, just to read. On top of that, the code must be rewritten in a new language and tested to prove it behaves exactly like the original. That takes a great deal of people, time, and money.
An AI agent is an AI you hand a task to. A normal AI chat answers one question at a time. An agent, given a goal, plans its own steps and keeps working: it reads code, writes code, runs it, checks the result, and fixes it. xAI's (SpaceXSI's) official page describes Grok Build as a tool that turns feature requests into pull requests (proposed code changes), with cloud agents doing the work in the background.
What happened
Here is what Tech Mahindra's release (October 22, 2026, Pune, India) says.
| Item | What the release says |
|---|---|
| Partner | SpaceXSI (described as an AI coding platform) |
| Tool | Grok Build |
| Goals | AI-assisted software development, legacy application modernization, faster software delivery, better code quality, and higher developer productivity |
| Emphasis | Governance, security, and compliance for enterprise use |
| Industries | Technology, telecom, banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail |
| Joint work | Go-to-market initiatives, customer engagements, industry-specific solutions, and enablement programs |
| Tech Mahindra's side | Enablement and certification programs, joint customer success initiatives, and a scalable alliance framework |
Sumit Kumar Popli, who leads Tech Mahindra's Technology, Media and Entertainment business, said enterprises are "moving beyond isolated AI experiments" and want to embed intelligence into their work. Toni Adams, head of global partnerships at SpaceXSI, said what enterprises need is "expertise in rolling it out across diverse and large engineering teams," and that the aim is to "bring GrokBuild into everyday engineering workflows."
Why it matters
In my view, the key point is that an AI company is reaching the inside of large enterprises through a contractor, rather than on its own.
Buying an AI coding tool is not enough for a big company to start using it. It has to decide which systems to use it on, make sure confidential data does not leak, decide who reviews AI-written code, and train its engineers. That is the "rollout expertise" SpaceXSI mentions in the release. An IT services firm like Tech Mahindra already looks after many companies' systems and knows each industry's rules, so it can bridge that gap.
Background: why coding tools are at the center of the deal
Software development is one of the areas where AI is most immediately useful. Code is written in text, like prose, and whether it works can be checked mechanically by running tests. Unlike many other kinds of work, correctness can be verified to a large extent without a person judging every answer.
In October 2026, xAI (SpaceXSI) also published "Grok for Startups," which gives credits for four services including Grok Build. Small companies get credits directly; large companies are reached through IT services partners. It reads as two delivery routes chosen by the size of the customer.
How it works: where AI helps in modernization
Splitting a modernization project into four stages shows where AI can help.
| Stage | Done by people alone | What an AI agent can help with (general examples) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Read | Read old code line by line and write down what it does | Read the code and explain its flow and how parts connect |
| 2. Rewrite | Write the same behavior in a new language | Draft the rewrite and submit it as a pull request |
| 3. Test | Build tests to confirm old and new code give the same results | Write and run tests, and fix what fails |
| 4. Review and ship | Engineers review it and move it to production | Summarize the changes so people can review them easily |
What matters is that people still make the final call. A bank or hospital cannot run AI-written code in production unchecked. The release stresses governance and security because rules about who reviews the AI's work, and how far it may go, are a precondition for enterprise use.
Timeline
- As of October 2026: xAI operates under the name SpaceXSI. Its official pages carry the copyright "SpaceXAI LLC."

- October 22, 2026 (India): Tech Mahindra announced its collaboration with SpaceXSI.
Useful takeaways
- "Partnership" can mean many things: This one is about adopting a tool, selling together, and training engineers. It is not an investment or a merger. Asking "what exactly will they do together?" helps avoid misreading the news.
- The value of AI coding tools depends on readiness: Performance alone is not enough. Large companies adopt a tool once rules for safe use and trained people are in place.
- Legacy systems are not "bad": They have a long record of working correctly, which is exactly why rebuilding them is done carefully. The goal of modernization is to make systems easier to connect and maintain without breaking them.
A question to continue
How can people confirm that AI-written code is actually correct? One answer lies in a software practice called "write the tests first."
